Go Green In The Bedroom

June 1st, 2011

The majority of lubricants that we are all familiar with are loaded with parabens, sugar and glycerin. Parabens have been linked to major health concerns, and sugar and glycerine can cause yeast infections. These lubes are also often petrochemical-based.

Luckily there are a number of natural household items that are green, environmentally friendly, and act just the same if not better as your typical store-bought lube. These will do wonders for your sex life. Organic coconut oil smells great, is edible, and works amazing as a lubricant. It also has natural antibacterial properties, but its best not to use it in conjunction with condoms. Honey is another great alternative, if you don’t mind its extreme stickiness. If you would prefer to purchase an actual lubricant, Pjur is a German-made pure silicone lube. Silicone is ideal as a lubricant base because it stays on the surface of your skin, doesn’t absorb, and is hypoallergenic. Another company called Hathor makes petroleum, glycerin and paraben-free lubes. They flavour their products with Stevia as opposed to sugar, ginseng, cinnamon and tangerine – sounds good enough to eat!

When it comes to purchasing green condoms, your best bet would be to invest in the Glyde brand. They are no more biodegradable than other store brands, but their workers are treated ethically and the company is especially careful about where their rubber is sourced.

If toys are your thing, silicone dildos and vibrators are the best. Companies like We Vibe, Lelo, Happy Valley and Fun Factory offer rechargeable toys. Earth Angel even offers a wind-up toy  made out of recycled plastic if you have no access to an electric plug to charge your toys. Can anyone say naughty camping trip?

A few extra changes you can make in your bedroom and lifestyle to go green is to shower together with the person you’re dating. Save water and have some steamy fun. Sleep naked. Purchase bamboo sheets; they whisk away sweat. Also, replace all of your candles with soy or beeswax candles; they smell better and are a lot better for you and the environment.
